Chunky ribbed beanie in one evening
A stretchy rib that looks knitted, made from a single rectangle. Worked flat, seamed, gathered, done.

This beanie is just a rectangle. You work rows of half double crochet through the back loop only, which creates the ribbing, then seam the short ends together and gather the top closed. No increases, no rounds, nothing to count except rows.
Materials
- Bulky weight (#5) yarn, 130–160 yd depending on size
- 6.5 mm (K-10½) hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Optional: pom-pom maker or a ready-made faux-fur pom-pom
Gauge
10 hdc and 8 rows = 4 in (10 cm), worked through the back loop only and measured relaxed.
Gauge matters on hats. Make a small swatch. If you get more stitches per 4 in, go up a hook size; fewer, go down.
Sizes
| Size | Head | Starting chain | Hat height | Rows (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Child | 19–20 in | 21 | 7½ in | 34 |
| Adult S/M | 21–22 in | 23 | 8½ in | 38 |
| Adult L | 23–24 in | 25 | 9 in | 42 |
The chain sets the height of the hat. The number of rows sets the width that wraps around the head.
Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- hdc: half double crochet (how to)
- BLO: back loop only, the loop furthest from you
- sl st: slip stitch
The pattern
Foundation: Ch 21 (23, 25).
Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (19, 21, 23 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 1 (doesn't count as a stitch), turn. Hdc in the BLO of each st across. (19, 21, 23)
Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures about 2 in (5 cm) less than your head circumference when laid flat and relaxed, about 34 (38, 42) rows. Do not fasten off.
Seam and gather
- Fold the rectangle in half so the foundation chain meets the last row.
- Slip stitch the two edges together through both layers. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail.
- Thread the tail on your needle and weave it in and out along the row ends of one opening (this will be the top of the hat).
- Pull firmly to gather the top closed, then make a few stitches across the centre to lock it. Knot on the inside and weave in.
Turn the hat right side out. Fold the bottom edge up 1–2 in if you'd like a brim.
Optional pom-pom
Tie the pom-pom on with its own strands, threading them through the gathered centre and knotting them inside. Faux-fur pom-poms often come with a snap, so you can take them off before washing.
Questions about this pattern
Why is the beanie worked sideways?
Working rows through the back loop only creates vertical ribs. When you work the rows sideways and then seam them, the ribs run up the hat like knitted ribbing, and the fabric stretches around the head.
How much smaller than my head should a beanie be?
About 2 inches (5 cm) smaller than the head measurement. The ribbing stretches, so a little negative ease keeps the hat snug.
